Why Spay and Neuter?

Sterilizing your pet is one of the most important decisions you can make about their health. Research has shown that spayed and neutered pets live longer and they tend to develop less unwanted behaviors that may land them in shelters.

In females, it greatly reduces the risk of breast cancer and it eliminates the risk of pyometra (a life-threatening infection of the uterus), uterine, and ovarian cancer. 1 in 4 intact older female dogs will develop mammary tumors or pyometra. It is recommended to spay prior to the first heat to prevent those problems. It is also more convenient.

A spayed dog will not go into heat that causes bloody discharge all over your house, or attract the stray male dog in your neighborhood. They can also get aggressive or loud during their heat cycles, and they may feel uncomfortable during that period. Cats will develop undesirable behaviors during their heat, such as yowling at night. We recommend to spay before the first heat, as the benefits of the surgery are maximized when done prior to the first heat, and her recovery is easier and faster when young.

In males, it eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and greatly reduces the risks of perianal (near the anus) tumors. It also decreases their urge to roam and spray urine to mark their territory. Intact male cat’s urine is exceptionally stinky, and they will spray their territory. Male animals may fight with others to establish territory, or escape to find a female to mate. Sometimes they can smell a female in heat for miles, and here in AZ, sometimes male dogs will chase a female coyote in heat with disastrous results!

Neutering a male dog involves only taking out the testicles. The scrotum is left behind. In adult male dogs, it can fill up with blood and get swollen. The swelling will go down in a few weeks. However, it will always remain as a small empty sac. Some people find that unsightly. If you want to have the sac removed at the same time as the neuter, we can do that for an extra charge.

The vast majority of stray animals taken into shelters are intact dogs and cats that have accidentally escaped when seeking romantic love outside their homes. The risk of intact dogs and cats escaping, roaming, and getting hit by cars or lost is high. Spaying and neutering also eliminates the risk of unwanted pregnancies and helps control the pet overpopulation problem.
